Article: TransECHO: A National Tele-Education Program for Expanding Transgender and Gender Diverse Health Care

Few clinicians have received training to provide comprehensive primary care for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people. This article describes the program design and evaluation outcomes of TransECHO, a national professional development program for training primary care teams on the provision of affirming integrated medical and behavioral health care for TGD people. TransECHO is based on Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), a tele-education model that aims to reduce health disparities and increase access to specialty care in underserved areas.

TransECHO January-June 2024 Cohort

Join us for  an opportunity for your health center to learn from experts and a cohort of peer organizations in order to increase the availability of culturally-responsible, comprehensive primary care for transgender and gender diverse people. TransECHO uses the Project ECHO model in conjunction with the application of practice transformation principles. Your health center will work alongside other health centers to create systems of care that support transgender and gender diverse patients with topics such as gender affirming care for youth, document changes and assessments, surgical gender affirmation, mental health care, and more! Sessions will be held from 2:00-4:00 PM EST every other Wednesday starting January 10th with our final session on June 12th. Applications open for 2021 TransECHO now!

All Federally Qualified Health Centers and FQHC look-alikes are invited to apply for the Spring 2021 cohort TransECHO program. TransECHO uses the ECHO case-based learning model to engage health systems in collaborating to improve health care for transgender and gender-diverse patients. Each monthly session includes a didactic presentation and case studies presented for group consultation.

TransECHO is a free program and CME credits are available.

Julie Thompson

Julie joined Fenway Health in 2010 as a primary care provider and she specializes in LGBTQIA+ health, high-resolution anoscopy, and is an HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine. In 2018 she was named Medical Director of the Trans Health Program, previously serving as Co-Director since 2016, and works to guide Fenway’s multidisciplinary team approach to provide high-quality, informed care to the trans and gender diverse communities.  She leads on-going education to support Fenway’s medical providers, as well as works interdepartmentally to ensure Fenway is a welcome space for all patients, regardless of how they identify.  Julie provides trainings through the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center, and is core faculty on TransECHO and TransLINE, both of which are transgender medical consultative services for health care providers across the country.  In April 2022 she was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors for the United States Professional Association of Transgender Health.
